The decision by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) on how to carve up the 287-strong Franklin’s supermarket chain has been slammed by the National Association of Retail Grocers of Australia. The association claims that despite insisting to the contrary, the ACCC has not put the brakes on the “unfettered expansion” of the major retailers, by allowing Woolworths to buy 67 of the best stores up for sale.

“The deal will see Woolworths and Coles Myer together gain 75% of Australia’s retail grocery market,” said Alan McKenzie, spokesman for the association: “The unvarnished truth is that Woolworths will pick up one-third of Franklins’ sales volume.”
 
“The ACCC has missed a unique opportunity to further enhance competition,” he added.
