FSANZ officially replaced the Australia New Zealand Food Authority (ANZFA) today, the result of a Council of Australian Governments decision in November 2000 following a review of food regulations in 1998.

As part of a broad reform to Australia’s food regulatory system, the new authority brings with it changes to the way standards are developed which will be overseen by a new twelve-member Board.

FSANZ is responsible for developing food standards for composition, labelling and contaminants that apply to all foods produced or imported for sale in Australia and NZ. In Australia, the authority develops food standards to cover the whole of the food supply chain for both the food manufacturing industry and primary producers.

Milne, a cattle producer from Cracow, Queensland, joins the board as the food industry organisation nominee. His expertise in the primary production area will provide a valuable asset to the new board, particularly in the development of standards relating to primary production and processing.
