Australia and China signed a deal last week that will give Australian meat producers widespread access to the Chinese market.

Australian Agriculture Minister Warren Truss said two new market access protocols give Australia’s beef, mutton and goat-meat producers virtually unrestricted access to sell in China, reported AFX Asia.
“This important market access achievement for Australian farmers and the meat-processing sector represents a significant breakthrough for Australian exporters seeking access to the substantial Chinese market,” Truss was quoted as saying.
Trade Minister Mark Vaile said the deal, which was the result of lengthy negotiations, ended severe restrictions on the range of meat products Australian farmers were allowed to sell in China.
Under the new deal, Australian abattoirs that export meat to China will require approval by China’s quarantine authority. An inspection tour is scheduled for August.
