Australian retailer Coles Myer has outlined aggressive expansion plans for its discount supermarket chain Bi-Lo

A number of sites have already been identified in eastern Australia, where most of the expansion is set to take place. Indeed, Townsville’s first Bi-Lo store is already under construction at North Ward.

“Bi-Lo continues to have a very aggressive growth strategy and has already identified a large number of sites we want as part of the business,” the company said. “These sites will mostly be on the eastern seaboard of Australia where Bi-Lo can take advantage of the larger population and the current size of the Bi-Lo network.”

Coles Myer is looking to open as many as 35 new supermarkets per year under both its Coles and Bi Lo brands.

Meanwhile, all of the company’s WA-based Newmart discount supermarkets will transfer to Coles supermarkets management. Coles Myer operates 62 supermarkets in western Australia, where the 18 Newmart Supermarkets will be transferred from the Bi-Lo operation to the Coles Supermarkets administration. The discount brand, Newmart, will continue to be operated, although some re-badging of stores may occur, the company said.
