The 2001 electoral campaign for Fairfax, in Queensland, has seen the deregulation of the dairy industry emerge as the major campaign issue.
Shane Paulger, Queensland president of the Australian Milk Producers Association, is running as an independent, with his campaign centred on the deregulation issue.
The process of de-regulation was actually initiated by the individual states in Australia, but Federal Government has received the brunt of the anger over the issue, according to Alex Somlyay, Liberal Party of Australia MP for Fairfax.
Somlyay told the Courier-Mail that Peter Beattie, the Queensland premier, was “very clever” in convincing voters that the blame rightly lies with the Federal Government.
