The drought in Australia could boost sugar production by 200,000 tonnes in the country’s main sugar producing state of Queensland. Much of the sugar cane has been left extremely dry by the drought, resulting in higher-than-usual concentrations of sugar in the cane. Managing director of Queensland Sugar, Neil Collie, told Reuters that this year’s production could exceed 4.8 million tonnes, up from an earlier forecast of 4.6 million tonnes.
