Demand for kangaroo meat has surged in parts of Europe as consumers and manufacturers seek safe, cheap alternatives to local beef, mutton and pork. Throughout the early part of this year, 100 tonnes of kangaroo meat was exported to Bulgaria every month. Sausage makers in the UK are also keen to source alternative fillings and enquiries have been made into Australian exports of boar and deer meat.

Officials from the Australian meat industry have said that exports to Europe will hit record levels this ear, although Don Cairns, Austrade’s senior trade commissioner in the Balkans, revealed that in order to maximise exports it is important to make potential customers aware that kangaroo meat can be eaten.
