The Sheepmeat Council of Australia has vowed to fight any move by South Africa to double tariffs on Australian sheepmeat.

South Africa is Australia’s largest mutton export market, and its proposed tariff increase would see an extra A$0.17 (US$0.09) import duty charged on every one kilogram of mutton. This would push tariffs to 80% of the mutton’s value and cost Australian sheep farmers up to A$30m worth of exports per year.
The Sheepmeat Council believes that Australia would be priced out of the South African market and vowed that if the tariffs are approved, it will immediately lodge a complaint with the World Trade Organisation.
