Goat farmers in Victoria see new opportunities in emerging Asian markets, and are taking steps to promote interest in their quality farmed goat meat.

Australia is the world’s largest exporter of goat meat, and Greg Ferrier, from the state Department of Natural Resources and Environment, explains: “South-east Australian goat meat producers are well positioned to meet the needs of discerning markets by consistently supplying a higher quality product.”

These discerning markets, notably Taiwan and Malaysia, currently import 4536 tonnes and 143 tonnes respectively, and producers are hoping to see this figure rise.

Ferrier, who is leading the department’s three-year long “Naturally Victorian” goat meat supply chain management project, spoke of the necessity of improving links between producers, processors and the market place. The first key step in this will be a series of four workshops, due to be held around the state from 8 May to 17 May.

Through the workshops, each producer group will be able to determine their information and training needs, said Ferrier, and they would be encouraged to produce a plan for future meetings, field days and business development.
