Australia’s commercial goat meat industry is now valued at A$35m (US$17.9m), and Australia is the largest exporter of goat meat in the world, as farmers over the last decade have slowly been turning the tables on the animals once viewed as a feral pest.

Furthermore, Jon Hayes, manager of Norvic Food Processing Wodonga, said that all landowners could easily harness the advantages of the feral meat. “Landowners used to regularly go out and shoot their feral goats… now they are mustering them and bringing them here,” he explained to the Herald and Weekly Times: “This change means that we now process 6000 and 8000 goat heads a week.”
Hayes added that producers should now look to creating better quality meat if they are to seize all available market opportunities. “Crossbreeding, combined with proper animal husbandry practices, is giving us, the processor, a better quality and more marketable product… and as consistency of supply tightens so will returns for farmers.”
