New South Wales Agriculture said it could be as long as seven years before burnt-out plant varieties such as banksias, which bees feed on, have recovered to the point where they flower “in a way that is useful to bees”.
Australia has started importing honey from overseas to meet consumer demand. A large consignment has already arrived from South America, for instance.
To maintain a steady supply, honey packers are prepared to offer record prices of up to A$2.40 (US$1.25) per kilo. Exports have shrivelled, and prices are expected to keep rising – good news for the producers unaffected by the bushfires, but adding insult to injury to those who were, and consequently have no product.
