Queensland Fishery Service is hoping to set up a jellyfish fishery.
The fishery would meet growing demand in Asian countries for dried jellyfish. According to QFS senior policy officer Phil Gaffney, dried jellyfish can fetch up to A$60 (US$33.1m).
The project is coming towards the end of its consultation period, and thus far no objections have been received. The developmental fishery will assess the sustainability of harvesting jellyfish in the Great Sandy Strait.
“There’s a great demand for product from Australia because of the cleanness of our waters,” Gaffney told ABC Regional News. “Product from other countries, their waters are fairly polluted, and product coming from Australia can reach a good price on the Asian market.”
