Soft drinks and fastfood could soon be outlawed in the Pitjantjatjara lands of central Australia, according to an Aboriginal health organisation.

A policy to control strictly the food available in stores in the area has already been endorsed by ten Pitjantjatjara communities, and Stephie Rainow, a Nganampa health officer, explained that this policy could soon become a by-law.

Rainow told the ABC News: “At the end of the day if they’ve endorsed the policy and the policy says this is what will occur, there will be for instance in the store managers’ contracts and in their duty statements, conditions set out under which they operate.”

The move has been suggested because of concern over the link between poor nutrition and chronic illness.
