International biotech giant Monsanto has applied to the Commonwealth Gene Technology Regulator for Australia’s first licence to commercially release GM canola.

“The application that Monsanto has put in is to undertake a general or a commercial release,” Commonwealth Gene Technology Regulator Dr Sue Meek told ABC Rural News: “So the extent to which GM canola became part of the commercial crop would be a matter between Monsanto and the growers that they entered into contracts with.”
Dr Meek added that if she decides to approve the application, Monsanto could soon sell the GM product on the open market.
