The federal promise of a “paddock to plate” approach to boosting agricultural exports is beginning to take shape, with agriculture minister Warren Truss revealing plans for the establishment of a high-level committee that will create a new national food strategy.

Truss said the committee would look at ways in which Australian food manufacturers can reach the global food market, effectively taking over from the Supermarket to Asia Council. The committee will incorporate representatives from all areas of the domestic industry; including processing, retailing, horticulture, transport packaging and technology sectors.

Issues of quarantine and export market access have been given high priority over the last year, and analysts have welcomed the government’s restructuring of the agriculture department to reflect the importance of proactively generating market demand. This policy has meant that the industry has also developed in terms of R&D.
