The Australian government has written a letter to authorities in the Philippines asking to be told why a ban has been imposed on imports of Australian beef.

The ban was imposed in response to a case of anthrax reported on a farm in Victoria. Given that the case involved just one animal, and that the farm in question had been placed under a 42-day quarantine, the measure is felt by Australian officials and farmers to be an overreaction.

The Australian government said it was unclear what was going on, since it had received no official notification that a ban had been imposed, although it has been widely reported in the press.

Further meetings are expected to take place between Australian representatives and Philippine authorities in Manila today [Friday], reported Reuters.
