According to an announcement lodged with the Australian Stock Exchange, a A$50m (US$39.3m) production facility for the joint venture will be built at Warrnambool Cheese’s Allansford site. It is expected to be operational in mid-2008.
Warrnambool said the deal was the consequence of increased demand for Vivinal GOS, a prebiotic ingredient used to increase fibre levels in health food products, infant nutrition and beverages.
Chairman David Karpin commented: “Utilising Warrnambool Cheese’s raw materials, we will further value-add to the whey stream from the existing manufacturing process at our plant to create a cutting-edge, high-value product for export”.
