Australian supermarket giant Woolworths has launched a promotion involving the sale of Tasmanian eggs in a bid to garner favour after rival Coles Supermarkets’ fall from grace.

Coles encountered much criticism when it imported 15,000 eggs from New South Wales-based Pace Farm into Tasmania for a national sales promotion. Critics said that the move endangered the local industry, putting farms and jobs at risk.
Local egg producers have now responded by selling their surplus eggs to Woolworths for a similar promotion, but in which Woolies is offering eggs for A$0.03 a dozen cheaper than the A$2 special at Coles. Woolworths’ Tasmania consultant Michael Kent hinted to The Mercury that the group might not even make any profit on the deal
John Groenewold, president of the Tasmanian Commercial Egg Producers’ Association, revealed that he was pleased Woolworths is using local eggs to compete with Coles.
