Darrell Lea, the Australian confectioner, has declared its products will be 100% palm-free by November.

The company’s Sydney and Melbourne factories have started replacing palm oil with sunflower oil across the entire range. The new, palm oil-free products hit shelves this week and, by November, all products in supermarkets will not contain the ingredient, the confectioner said.

On the Darrell Lea website, the company stated: “Removing palm oil and all its derivatives from the Darrell Lea range has been no small feat. It’s taken almost two years and the discontinuation of some of our products to make the transition possible.

“Having reviewed over 200 different ingredients, we felt sunflower oil was the best substitute from an environmental and product quality perspective.

“Also unlike oils such as coconut, sunflower oil doesn’t require a tropical environment in which to grow, therefore isn’t linked to rainforest deforestation.”

Darrell Lea will also redesign the packaging for the products with a new logo and clear ingredient listings.
