Belgian retailer Delhaize said it is interested in expansion opportunities in the Balkan region.

The retailer today (14 July) declined to comment on reports it is in talks with Serbia’s Delta Holding to acquire a stake in its retail chain Delta Maxi, but told just-food that it would consider acquisitions in the wider Balkan region.

Belgian daily De Tijd reported yesterday that Delhaize was unlikely to obtain more than just over 50% in the group, which is active in Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Bulgaria.

However, a spokesperson for the retailer said: “We have always said we are interested in newer markets and the Balkan region we see as a region with a lot of opportunities.”

The spokesperson declined to comment on opportunities in Serbia.

At the end of 2009, Delhaize’s Romanian Mega Image store network amounted to 51 stores.
