Belarus has revealed plans to sharply increase its exports of cheap beet sugar to the Russian market this autumn, which could mean that as much as 200,000 tonnes of sugar will have been supplied to Russia this year. This compares to 60,000 to 70,000 tonnes last year.

According to a report in Novecon, Belarus benefits from current legislation that enables it to export locally produced sugar to Russia duty-free.


The Russian authorities have expressed concern that the dumping of such large amounts of sugar could mean that prices drop considerably in its domestic market.
