Carrefour is preparing to detail plans for its Belgium business today (23 Febrary) after reports suggested that the group is planning between 2,000 and 5,000 lay-offs at its business in the country.

Speaking after Carrefour posted a 74.2% slide in 2009 net profit last week, CEO Lars Olofsson said that the company was reviewing its activities in Belgium, where the performance was described as “not satisfactory”.

Olofsson insisted the company “wants” to stay in Belgium, where sales have suffered and the retailer has faced strike action, but added that it was reviewing its under-performing operations there.

A spokesperson for the company declined to comment on whether job losses in Belgium are likely until the group publishes its official plans later this afternoon.
