Belgian retail group Colruyt has reported an 8.6% rise in sales for the first nine months of the fiscal year to EUR4.2bn (US$6.2bn), on the back of strong Christmas trading.

The increase stemmed primarily from growth at the company’s Colruyt stores, which rose by by 7.8% to EUR3.26bn, the retailer reported.


 


Colruyt said there had been strong sales momentum at its Colruyt stores during the Christmas holidays, and that the progress had been achieved in spite of increased competition in Belgium and higher inflation.

The retailer added that the inflationary impact of rising raw material costs on world markets is focusing consumer attention on price.


 


“In the last few months the Colruyt banner stores gained market share again as a result of the clear commitment of lowest prices between the group and its customers,” the company said.


 


At the end of December 2007, the company was trading from 206 Colruyt, 49 Okay and four Bio-Planet stores, one of which is in the Netherlands. All the other stores are in Belgium.
