The towns of Ravels and Baarle-Hertog have been cordoned off while a farm near Ravels is investigated, according to a spokesman for the federal foodsafety agency.

“Given the high rate of mortality and the symptoms found during an autopsy, the veterinarian thought it was serious enough (to suspect infection by the disease),” Pascal Houbaert told Reuters, adding that the cause of death should be determined within a matter of days.

Officials are also monitoring 26 other farms that received eggs and chickens from the Netherlands, where an outbreak of avian flu was recently discovered.

Transport restrictions have been imposed in Belgium to prevent a possible spread of the highly infectious disease.
