Belgium-based retailer Delhaize Group has not commented on reports that it has acquired Romania’s Gimrom Holding.

Piata, a Romanian grocery news magazine, published a report stating Delhaize bought  supermarkets owned by Gimrom Holding at the end of August.

A spokesman from Delhaize said: “It is our policy not to respond to market rumours.”

The group has made no secret of its desire to expand in Eastern Europe.

In December it opened the first two shops of a new chain of Shop & Go convenience stores in Bucharest and bought a pair of stores from the Primavera supermarket chain.

In March, it struck a EUR932.5m (US$1.3bn) deal to buy Serbian retailer Delta Maxi Group.

The acquisition saw Delhaize take control of approximately 450 stores in Serbia, Bulgaria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and Albania.

The group also recently set up Delhaize Europe, a unit that will focus on its domestic business and its operations in south-eastern Europe.
