Mexican bakery group, Grupo Bimbo, has announced a US$9.3m investment to expand operations at its plant in Orangeburg, South Carolina.

The plant produces Sara Lee branded bread products and the investment will see the renovation and installation of new equipment to expand its capability.

The expansion will see 30 new jobs created and is expected to be complete by the second quarter of the year. Orangeburg County was awarded a US$150,000 grant from the Coordinating Council for Economic Development to assist with the cost of property improvements related to the project.

"Bimbo Bakeries USA is excited to expand our baking operations in Orangeburg. Aside from its geographic advantage as a logistics center, Orangeburg has nurtured a business-friendly environment and a strong workforce that we hope will enable us to continue to grow in South Carolina," said Gordon Powell, Orangeburg plant manager for Bimbo Bakeries USA.
