The dairy industry of Bolivia suffered a double setback this year from the nation’s economic crisis and recent highway blockades. The 4,500 dairy farmers in the Cochabamba area estimate that they have suffered millions of US dollars worth of losses. By the end of September, activity at dairy farms was grinding to a halt for lack of cattle feed and an inability to transport raw milk to market.

Consumers in major cities faced dairy product shortages and rising prices. Dairy associations are pressing the government to fund the rebuilding of the industry’s antiquated infrastructure and limit the importation of low cost powdered milk.
