Brazilian supermarket chain Bompreco, owned by Dutch retailer Ahold, has said second-quarter losses at its stores in Bahia were much wider than in the prior-year quarter.

Bompreco Bahia, which operates 49 of Bompreco’s 119 supermarkets and hypermarkets, posted a second-quarter loss of BRL28m (US$9.7m), compared with a loss of BRL7.8m a year earlier, reported Dow Jones International News.

The regional chain said its net revenue was up 7.5% to BRL271.6m for the second quarter, but operating losses were 120% wider at BRL18.1m.

Ahold is currently in the process of selling its Bompreco and G. Barbosa Brazilian retail chains. Brazilian retailer Companhia Brasileira de Distribuicao and French retail giant Carrefour have both expressed interest in Ahold’s Brazilian assets, while US retail titan Wal-Mart is also believed to be interested.
