Brazil’s biggest supermarket retailer Companhia Brasileira de Distribuicao (CBD) has reported nominal same-store sales growth of 6.6% in August, as higher food sales offset declining sales of non-food items.

CBD, which is often known by the name of its supermarket chain Pao de Acucar, posted total gross sales of BRL1.05bn (US$360.6m) for August, a rise of 11.3% compared to the previous year. Total net sales rose 10.9% to BRL882.7m.

Same-store sales of food items rose 8.8% in August, compared to the year-ago period, while non-food sales slid 0.7%.

After adjusting for inflation, the company’s same-store sales were 7.4% lower than the year-ago period, while total sales increased 2.6%, reported Dow Jones International News.
