The SAG is concerned that beef from the state of Matto Grosso do Sul may have become contaminated with foot and mouth disease because of the state’s close proximity to Paraguay, where the disease was detected on 1 November. Chile, Brazil and Argentina have already banned imports of beef from Paraguay.

Around one third of beef consumed in Chile originates from Brazil and Paraguay, reported Reuters.

The SAG said that the preventative measure would last until Brazil’s veterinary authorities provide detailed reports on the spread of the disease and measures that the state is taking to overcome it.
