French retailer Carrefour has said it plans to triple its investment in its Brazil operations to BRL600m (US$179m) in 2003.

The company also said it would focus on opening new stores rather than acquiring stores, reported Reuters.


Eric Uzan, the new head of Carrefour’s Brazilian division, said the retailer planned to open seven or eight hypermarkets and five supermarkets this year.


The retailer also plans to work on reducing supply, logistics and warehousing costs, as well as reducing product wastage and robbery in stores.
