Brazilian retailer Pao de Acucar will reopen its 124 outlet-strong Barateiro supermarket chain tomorrow, giving the public a chance to view the results of a R$35m (US$13m) store refurbishment programme.

The chain’s outlets have been closed since Sunday, and will reopen with new fittings and uniforms for the staff.

“It is a revolution,” group chairman Abilio Diniz told the Gazeta Mercantil newspaper.

Diniz explained that the company is hoping the refit will allow the stores to target a new group of consumers, the low-income bracket, despite offering the same standard of service usually offered to consumers in the high-income bracket.
