Representatives from Brazil’s agriculture ministry are to meet with Russian officials this week in a bid to end Russia’s ban on meat imports from Brazil due to a foot and mouth disease outbreak last month.

Jose Dimarzio, executive secretary of the agriculture ministry, said he is to meet with Sergei Dankyert, Russia’s vice minister of agriculture, and will attempt to clarify local sanitary issues raised by Russia, reported Reuters.

Russia is the main destination for Brazilian beef and pork exports and also imports a substantial amount of Brazilian poultry. However, Russia banned all meat imports from Brazil on 20 September following a new case of foot and mouth disease in the northern Brazilian state of Amazonas.
