Exports of Brazilian beef increased 59% in the last two years, while chicken exports increased by 50%. Exports of Brazilian pork to Russia alone increased nearly 340% in two years, according to the US Meat Export Federation, an organisation whose aim is to develop overseas markets for US meat. Meanwhile, US pork exports to Russia amounted to 9,572 tonnes between January and August this year, compared to 20,043 tonnes for the same period last year.

USMEF CEO Phil Seng described the growth of Brazil’s worldwide meat market share as a “major concern” for the US.

While US meat exports are suffering due to competition from other countries’ meat industries, Brazilian meat exports are thriving. Production costs for Brazilian beef are lower than those in the US, making Brazil a tough competitor on the export markets.

Brazil’s beef exports are also threatening shipments from Australia, reported Reuters.
