Burton’s Biscuit Co. is hiring again at its factory in Wales amid “unprecedented demand” for its Maryland Cookies, Wagon Wheels and Jammie Dodgers brands.

The UK business, headquartered in St Albans, north of London, took on 30 full-time staff in January last year at its Llantarnam, Cwmbran plant, and is now seeking an additional 40 workers.

Burton’s said it is hiring in the areas of production and processing, engineering and supervisory functions. The company operates seven factories in the UK, including one it inherited in Livingston, Scotland, when it acquired shortbread and chutney maker Paterson Arran in 2019,

Simon Browne, the company’s managing director, said: “The Llantarnam bakery is proud to be one of the local area’s largest employers and has played a key role in Burton’s growth and success in recent years. We’re pleased that at a difficult time, when some are losing their jobs, we are able to offer 40 people the opportunity to join a successful, award-winning team, giving them the opportunity to contribute to the bakery’s continued success.”

Once the new positions are filled, Burton’s will have about 750 workers at the Llantarnam facility, the company’s largest manufacturing plant, which last year produced about 200 million packets of biscuits, it said.
