Spanish meat major Campofrío is investing €134m ($156.7m) in a new processed-meat plant in its home market

The new factiory in Utiel will replace a site 75 km east in Torrent close to the city of Valencia.

The Torrent site, which employed over 300 workers, was “severely” damaged by a hurricane in October. In a statement (26 June), the company said it “reaffirms its commitment” to these employees.

According to Campofrío, the new factory will have more installed capacity, enabling it “to better adapt to evolving demand for processed meats”.

The new factory in Utiel is part of a wider programme of investment worth €157m, Campofrío said. The company is also spending €23m on new production lines at its plant in Burgos.

Owned by Mexico’s Sigma Alimentos, Campofrío operates in 17 countries and manufactures a range of cured and cooked meat products, sausages, snacks and pizzas.

According to a separate statement from Sigma, both projects are expected to be completed in order for the new factory in Utiel and the new lines at the site in Burgos are up and running in 2027.

In 2020, Campofrío launched its first vegan product, Magic Burger, made from soy, peas, and mushrooms. The move came three years after the launch of the Campofrío Vegalia unit, aimed at “responding to the needs of the vegetarian or flexitarian consumer”.

Campofrío sits under Sigma’s Europe reporting unit. In 2024, the division generated revenue of $2.28bn, down 3% on a year earlier. Its EBITDA more than tripled to $95m, “driven by structural efficiencies and a gradually improving cost environment”, Sigma said.

Sigma’s group-wide revenue grew 4% to $8.8bn. EBITDA increased 17% to $1.05bn.
