OTTAWA – The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is warning consumers allergic to penicillin not to consume fresh pork processed by Mitchell’s Gourmet Foods Inc., Saskatoon, Saskatchewan as it may contain penicillin. It is believed that the penicillin was introduced to the hogs at the farm level. The affected products have been available for sale since December 5, 2001. This warning is of concern only to individuals allergic to penicillin.

Mitchell’s Gourmet Foods Inc., Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, is voluntarily recalling the affected product. The affected product has been distributed in Ontario (west of Thunder Bay), Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia. Consumers who are allergic to penicillin are encouraged to check with their retailer to determine if pork purchased on or after December 5, 2001 was supplied by Mitchell’s Gourmet Foods Inc. If consumers allergic
to penicillin cannot identify or confirm that the product was produced by Mitchell’s Gourmet Foods Inc., they should not consume the product.


Consumption of this product may cause a serious or life-threatening reaction in persons with allergies to penicillin. There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of this product.
