Canadian baker Canada Bread will close its Laval bakery in Quebec in March with the loss of around 55 jobs.

The company said yesterday (5 January) that the move would make the business more competitive. Production will switch to other sites that make frozen bakery items.

“This closure was a difficult decision to make and we will do everything we can to ease the impact on our people,” said Réal Ménard, president of Canada Bread’s frozen bakery division with Canada Bread. “However, it will allow us to improve the cost structure and competitiveness of our business, while continuing to deliver the same high standards of products and service to our customers and consumers.”

Affected staff will get the chance to apply for jobs at the company’s fresh bakery site in Quebec, where 60 posts will need to be filled this summer.

Maple Leaf Foods, the Canadian food group, has a 90% stake in Canada Bread. In November, Maple Leaf announced plans to close a prepared meats facility in Nova Scotia. A month earlier, Maple Leaf set out a five-year plan to restructure its processed meats and bakery operations to boost margins.
