The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Hanif’s International Foods Ltd.,  are warning the public not to consume Dal Makhani, lentils in a mild curry sauce, because this product may contain the bacteria responsible for botulism, a foodborne illness in humans.


Delta, BC-based Hanif’s International is voluntarily recalling the affected products from the marketplace.


Distributed in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, the products are sold in 450g cans and bear a UPC 0 69184 01674 0 and product code CDMC/31BAB.


Botulism is a life-threatening illness caused by the build-up of toxins produced by Clostridium botulinum bacteria. Food contaminated with C. botulinum will not look or smell spoiled. Consumers should dispose of the remaining product immediately or return product to the point of purchase for a refund.


There have been no reported illnesses so far associated with the consumption of this product.
