The standards have yet to be approved by the Canadian General Standards Board, a process that could take some months.

Environmental lobby group Greenpeace criticised the draft standards, arguing that labelling of GM foods should be mandatory, not voluntary.

Greenpeace was among several anti-GM groups that refused to join the 128-member committee, saying it was dominated by the food industry, reported the Canadian Press.
