Prime minister Stephen Harper announced the plan and vowed to make the guidelines clearer.

The Canadian government, he said, is aiming to “tighten definitions of these familiar labels so Canadians know exactly what they’re getting and get exactly what they want”.

Current rules allow companies to use a “Product of Canada” label if most of the product’s costs are spent in Canada.

Proposed regulations permit such a label only when the contents and processing of food are Canadian.
