Last year Canadians consumed 39.4 kg of fresh fruits per capita, as well as 40.5 kg of vegetables, not counting potatoes – consumed as fresh cooked, frozen fries or crisps.

Statistics Canada reports that apples represent a fifth of fresh fruit consumption, and while bananas, oranges and grapes are popular, mangoes, limes, papayas and pineapple are gaining favour.

Preserves, frozen and dried fruits experienced a small decrease in consumption.

Individual consumption of butter, margarine, frying oils decreased slightly last year to 21.4 kg per person, but use of oils, shortening, vinaigrettes, and batters in restaurants and baking mixes grew the overall fats total for the past several years.
