The number of deaths connected to the outbreak has climbed to 20, the Public Health Agency of Canada confirmed yesterday (1 October).


The agency said that another death in Ontario was the result of the listeriosis epidemic caused by contamination of Maple Leaf pre-cooked meat products.


The outbreak, announced last month, has resulted in the nationwide recall of 191 Maple Leaf products.


The company said bacteria, found in two of its slicing machines, was most likely the cause of contamination.
