The group, sent by the National Coordination of the Canadian Quality Assurance Program (CQA), focused on farm hog programs in Denmark, the Netherlands and England and at broader food safety programs in operation across Switzerland and Germany.

Dawn LeBlanc, national CQA coordinator, told Farmscape that the EU’s programs are based on HACCP, an internationally recognised system for food safety.

“In every situation what we were looking at was a centrally run industry […] included things like welfare and to some extent environment [issues] as well as food safety.  Their structures are really the very strongest part of their programme.

“We learned some interesting points about how they’ve continued to maintain producer input which is a strength that we feel very committed to here in Canada, and which the Europeans have maintained in their programmes as well.”

LeBlanc added that a complete report on the tour and its findings and recommendations will be published by 1 July.
