Canada’s federal government has finalized new comprehensive regulations to protect consumers against false organic claims and govern the use of an organic industry logo. The Organic Products Regulations also aim to strengthen the industry’s capacity to respond to international and domestic market opportunities while protecting its image.
A ‘Canada Organic’ logo will be permitted for use only on those food products certified as meeting revised Canadian standards for organic production, and that contain at least 95% organic ingredients. The logo will help provide a competitive advantage for the Canadian organic sector, while protecting it against deceptive and misleading claims on organic products.
The regulations come after three years of consultation with industry and consumer groups. Phased in over the next two years, the regulations will make it mandatory that all organic products be certified for internal and international trade.
