President and CEO Henry Demone explained: “Over the past three years, the competitive challenges facing the wetfish operations have been openly and honestly shared with employees.

“In order for us to continue our wetfish operation in Lunenburg, significant changes would have been required. New ways of operating the business were explored jointly by management and unionised employees, however no viable solutions were identified. This has led the company to the decision to exit groundfish processing in Lunenburg.

“This was a difficult decision for the company, but it has to be made in order to strengthen the secondary processing business.”

High Liner will continue to operate its remaining operations in Lunenburg on an ongoing basis, maintaining about 700 full time jobs.
