The ramifications of popular low-carbohydrate diets such as Atkins have been felt by many manufacturer of starch-based products, and Canadian potato processor McCain Foods appears to have joined the list.
The privately held company does not release financial data except annual turnover, and this was reported to be up by 4.9% to C$6.4bn (US$4.8bn) in the year ended 30 June last year. However, a credit report compiled by the Dominion Bond Rating Service indicates that sales of the company’s core products, frozen potatoes, slipped last year.
DBRS attributed the fall to increased health awareness, notably about the adverse effects of fastfood consumption and also associated health risks such as obesity.
