Maple Leaf Foods is to close a plant in Winnipeg as part of the ongoing overhaul of its meat processing operations.

The Canada-based food group said some 650 jobs will go at the Warman Road site, which processes carcasses into value-added pork products.
Under the C$50m (US$50.4m) restructuring programme, Maple Leaf plans to boost value-added production at a second site in Brandon, Manitoba.
The expansion will see production at the Brandon site rise from 75,000 hogs a week to some 86,000.
“We are establishing highly efficient scale plants that are globally competitive, securing a strong future for the Manitoba pork industry,” said Rick Young, president of Maple Leaf Foods.

Maple Leaf has spent recent months restructuring its business. Last year, the company closed other meat processing sites in Canada and sold its animal nutrition business.
