Canadian retailer Metro Inc is to shut a distribution site in Quebec, with the loss of over 110 jobs.

Metro said “major investments” would have been needed at its produce site in St-Augustin-de-Desmaures to meet demand in the sector.

Produce volumes handled at St-Augustin-de-Desmaures will switch to a dairy distribution site further south west in Laval, just outside Montreal.

The retailer said 114 staff at St-Augustin-de-Desmaures would be affected by the move. However, it claimed over 80 jobs would be created at Laval “over time”.

Earlier this month, Metro reported an increase in annual profits but a fall in sales, citing, like rival Loblaw, fierce competition in the last three months.
