By next June, the seafood sold in its stores in Quebec and Ontario will come from sustainable sources.

“This initiative is proof that we want to go beyond the role of distributor and become an actor in sustainable development,” said COO Robert Sawyer.

From September, Metro will stop selling a number of threatened species and will change its product labelling.

Yesterday, Canadian retailer Loblaw said it would double the number of wild seafood products on sale that are certified by the Marine Stewardship Council.
